Sahli Haemoglobinometer

This kit was kindly loaned to the Society by Dr. Belinda Coyte

Estimation of blood haemoglobin level is an essential part of pre-operative and other medical screening. Currently this can be performed almost instantaneously by the use of a Coulter Counter.

In the past however the process was more complex, it required a fixed quantity of blood to be mixed with dilute hydrochloric acid and water in order to match a provided standard colour. The volume of fluid added was proportional to the patient’s haemoglobin level. Many surgeons in the 1940s carried a kit in their bags.
